Keeping your baby comfortable in Qatar’s intense summer heat can feel overwhelming. With temperatures climbing above 40°C in places like Doha, Lusail, and Al Wakrah, it’s important to stay prepared. Here are practical, parent-friendly tips to keep your little one safe, cool and happy through the hot months — from sunscreen to water play ideas.

Outdoor safety

Sunscreen plays a big role in protecting babies during summer. Choose SPF30 or higher, and reapply even when your little one is in the shade. Sunscreens formulated for babies or sensitive skin are always a better choice. Babies under six months should stay out of direct sunlight altogether. Stroller parasols, car-seat shades, and pram umbrellas are essential when walking around outdoor areas like Souq Waqif or Corniche Park.

Cool baths and shallow paddling pools help bring temperatures down safely. Just remember the key water-safety rules:

  • Always supervise your baby closely.
  • Avoid distractions (phones, conversations).
  • Don’t rely on older siblings to supervise.
  • Bath seats, inflatable rings, or floating seats still require full supervision.
  • Floatation aids aren’t enough protection in open water.

In Qatar’s heat, a few minutes of supervised water play goes a long way.

Outdoor activities vs indoor activities

There are many fun ways to enjoy summer, whether outdoors early in the morning or inside air-conditioned spaces.

Organise a shaded teddy-bear picnic with weaning-friendly finger foods, or let the babies enjoy tummy-time on a cool indoor mat with a soft fan running. If the heat is intense, indoor options are safer and more comfortable.

Indoor activities

  • Run a cool bath filled with toys.
  • Make fruit ice pops or breastmilk lollies for weaning babies.
  • Fill a washing-up tub with bubbly water for sensory play.
  • Visit baby-friendly, air-conditioned places like Doha Festival City, Villaggio Mall, Gate Mall, or the Doha Aquarium — all temperature-controlled and perfect for little ones.

Outdoor activities

(Always best early morning or late evening.)

  • Set up a shaded paddling pool or water tray with age-appropriate toys.
  • Head to a local splash park in Lusail Marina or Aspire Park.
  • Let your baby enjoy bubbles, wind chimes or shaded mat play.

Always avoid outdoor play between 11am–3pm during peak heat.

How to dress baby in the heat in Qatar

Because babies can’t regulate their temperature well, it’s important to monitor how they react to heat.

Heat rash is common in Qatar’s humidity — prickly, itchy, and uncomfortable, but manageable. Dress baby in light-coloured, loose, cotton clothing and give frequent cool baths. Remove waterproof mattress protectors during summer as they trap heat.

For bedtime, choose light cotton bedding and 0.5–1 tog sleeping bags.

During stroller walks, wide-brim hats and light UV-protected clothing help shield delicate skin.

Sunglasses with adjustable straps stay on better and give added protection when outdoors.

Swimwear should cover shoulders, arms, and legs where possible — most baby suits now come with excellent UV protection.

Feeding & Nap Schedules  for Qatar Climate

During Qatar’s hot months, babies may feed more often. Breastfeeding helps hydration naturally, and breastfed babies under six months usually do not need additional water.

Hydration in Hot Weather Weaning babies can have small amounts of cooled boiled water with meals. Formula-fed babies may also need small sips of cooled boiled water during the day, depending on the temperature.

Watch for dehydration signs:

  • Fewer wet nappies
  • Sunken soft spot
  • Dryness around the lips
  • Drowsiness or low energy
  • Sunken eyes
Nap Time Tip Summer naps can be tricky. Close blinds during the day, cool the room before nap time, and aim for a sleep space between 16°C and 20°C. If AC isn’t available, a rotating fan or portable unit can help.

Formula Safety in Heat Always prepare bottles in air-conditioned rooms. Never mix formula in hot cars or direct sunlight. Discard unfinished bottles within one hour, as heat speeds up spoilage.

Road Trips in the Summer Heat

If you’re heading out to Al Khor Beach, Zekreet, or the Inland Sea, planning ahead makes travelling with a baby much easier.

Pack Smart
  • Formula, bottles, and pre-boiled hot water in a flask
  • Wipes, nappies, bibs, and comfort toys
  • Car-seat shade for extra sun protection
  • Pram, travel cot, or sun parasol stored in the boot
Travel Safety Reminder Pre-cool the car before placing your baby inside, make regular pit stops for nappy changes, and prepare bottles only in cool, shaded areas.

Planning baby-friendly activities ahead of time can also help. Shaded beaches, hotel pools, aquariums, and nature parks around Qatar offer safe ways to enjoy family time — even during the warmer months.
